Lunar Eclipse - Feb 20, 2008:
I took this photo during the last total lunar eclipse in Vancouver on Feb 20, 2008. The next one will be the night of Dec 20 - 21, 2010. I’m really hoping for a clear night, but that’s not very likely for Vancouver in the winter! If you want to take some photos during the eclipse and are looking for some tips - check out my blog. Thanks! Photography by Lloyd K. Barnes Photography.

Vancouver Lunar Eclipse

This is my most popular photo on Flickr. It was shot during the lunar eclipse in August 2007. I set my alarm for 2 a.m. and sleepily went out on my deck with my camera and tripod. The moon was an amazing orb just hanging in space. It passes through the earth’s shadow during the total eclipse but it does not go completely dark because of the earth’s light reflecting back on it. Instead it is a beautiful deep orange colour. I took a bunch of photos and then took some of the Vancouver skyline. I used Photoshop Elements to merge the cityscape with the moon shot, and I altered the city shot making it blue to contrast with the moon. The colour of the moon was not changed. When I posted it on Flickr the next day, it went to number 1 on Explore and continues to receive many hits and comments. There were many great photos posted on Flickr after the lunar eclipse and I was thrilled and amazed that my shot received so much attention!
